Introduction

In the 1950s, a 4-lane freeway from Frederick to Washington opened as US
240. It was known as the Washington National Pike. During the
years, the Washington National Pike evolves into I-70S and eventually I-270
in 1974. Since 1974, I-270 has grown from 4 lanes to 12 as you get
closer to Washington. In the late 1980s, a section of I-270 was known
as the "I-270 Technology Corridor", where several Biotech firms call home.

east of Frederick was known as I-70N. Photo taken by Alex Nitzman.)
