Missouri: Past and Present
The map on the left is St. Louis as it was in 1973. The map to the
right is the current route in 1981. From the early 1960s through the
early 1980s, 270 in Missouri changed several times. In the mid 1970s,
the entire St. Louis beltway system was absorbed as I-270. However,
IDOT had plans of their own when the eastern bypass was built, and the current
routes of I-270 and I-255 were decided by 1982 or 1983. Since then,
the focus has switched from extensions to reconstructions. Traffic
was growing at a rapid rate, due in part to population growths in West St.
Louis and St. Charles Counties. From 1975 to 2000, the interchanges
at I-70, US 40, I-55, and I-44 were rebuilt, one by one in that order. Come
late in 2003, the interchange with I-170 will be rebuilt, marking the fifth
major interchange to get redone. Meanwhile, the interchanges with Manchester
and Olive have gone gotten makeovers, and Page will come soon thereafter.
